2003
LL League Coaches Association Hall of Fame Inductee:
George
Way

The candidates paraded through Former Manheim Central superintendent Lewis
Jury's office when he interviewed to fill the head wrestling coach position in
1987. The famous, the not-so-famous, and the legends, some in their own mind, he
saw them all. Then there came one man, a
Williamsport
native, a Lock Haven grad. Jury knew he had
his man and hired him. It was the best professional hire of Dr. Jury's
administrative career. Not just because of the wins and losses, the titles won,
the glory attained, but because in
George Way
, Manheim Central had a man who put children
first. A state place winner while wrestling scholastically for
Williamsport
High School
, George won nearly 100 matches for Lock Haven.
His coaching career took him on stops to
Williamsport
;
Macon
,
Georgia
;
Clemson
University
and Mechaniscburg, where he headed his first
program. In 11 years as head coach of the Barons, Way's teams were 142-44-4,
winning L-L Section titles in 1989, '90 '95 and '97. His teams won four
sectional tournament titles, one L-L League Tournament title and two District
III tournament titles. Individually, George coached seven Manheim Holiday
Tournament title winners, 27 sectional champions, seven District Ill/South
Central Region Champions, 25 state qualifiers and 12 state place winners. Among
those twelve state place winners were five finalists: State Champions Scott
Auker ('91), Troy Barbush ('94), Jason Parmer ('95) and Joe Dougherty ('97) and
state runner-up Roger Fenstermacher ('92). Following the 1998 season Way stepped
down as head coach, in order to devote more time to his family and increasing
professional responsibilities as an educator/administrator.
